What You Need To Know About Facial Hair Removal

What is the best way to remove unwanted facial hair? Shaving isby far the most common method of hair removal for both men andwomen. Men have been shaving their beards and mustaches forthousands of years. One need only take a look at the hugeselection of razors available today to support this. Shavingcreams, gels, foams and other products facilitate the shavingprocess and help reduce skin irritation. But for women sufferingwith unwanted facial hair, their choices are not so obvious. Many men too are looking for alternatives.

Women with excessive facial hair usually see it along the upperlip, down the sides of the face, and on the chin. Unlike withmen, shaving isn’t the best removal option. So what’s a woman todo? Because facial hair is typically much more than a fewwayward hair follicles, plucking these areas isn’t an effectivemethod. It’s time-consuming and painful! What’s needed insteadis a method designed for more widespread removal likedepilatories and waxing or even electrolysis or laser treatment.

1. Depilatories

Depilatories are an inexpensive, short-term facial hair removaloption. Available in gel, cream, lotion, aerosol, and roll-onforms, they contain a highly alkaline chemical - usually calciumthioglycolate - that dissolves the protein structure of thehair, causing it to separate easily from the skin surface.Extreme care must be taken when using on the face as theseproducts can irritate and even burn facial skin. And becausedepilatories only dissolve visible hair, this method must berepeated frequently as new hair growth appears. The upside is,this process is inexpensive and can be done in the privacy ofyour own home.

2. Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal technique that works bydestroying individual hair follicles so that hair can no longergrow. Electrolysis and laser are better options. They’repermanent facial hair removal methods and they work by damagingthe base of the hair follicle so that hair growth no longeroccurs. Both of these are expensive options and repeatedsessions are generally necessary to remove all hair. Butconsidering that relatively small surface areas are involved, many people are able to justify the costs, the risks and thediscomfort involved.

3. Tweezing and Waxing

While depilatories remove hair at the skin’s surface,”epilatories,” such as tweezers and waxes, pluck hairs frombelow the surface. Waxing offers many benefits and is the facialhair removal choice of men and women alike. Like with tweezers, when waxing the hair is ‘plucked’ from its root. This methoddoesn’t damage the actual hair follicle, so new hair growth willcontinue to occur, but unlike depilatories, new hair growthwon’t appear on the skin surface as quickly. In fact, it usuallyisn’t visible for several weeks. And, if you’re brave enough, waxing facial hair can be done by you at home, however many optto have someone else perform this procedure. Waxing and tweezingmay be more painful than using a depilatory, but the results arelonger lasting. Because the hair is plucked at the root, newgrowth is not visible for several weeks after treatment.

The cost, safety, effectiveness, and ease of use of the variousmethods, as well as the area and amount of hair growth to betreated, are some factors to weigh in choosing a method anddeciding whether to go to a professional. Often, differentmethods are better suited for different areas.

Winter has certainly came earlier than usual this year in Sydney. At least it feels that way this year around.

When winter comes, many of us tend to neglect many usual routines that keep our skin and complexion healthy. We tend to drink less fluid, keep a less than healthy diet, do less exercise and keep our hands and feet hidden away in cloves and socks with closed shoes. But this is not what your doctor, your nutritionist nor your dermatologist/beautician would prescribe.

Quite the contrary actually.

The air is much dryer in Winter and there are many more air-borne bacteria and viruses abound (one of many reasons why we all catch a cold or flu this season), thus we need to keep up with usual regiment of healthy eating, lots of exercise, drink a lot of fluids (distilled or purified water is good :-) ) and use plenty of moisturiser cream to keep your skin moist and healthy. Especially for your hands and fingernails, keep using hand lotion and/or cuticle oils at least in the morning and at night time. Remember that because winter is cold, we tend to wash our hands in hot water more often than not. Plus other cleansing agent/chemical which can really make our hands and nails too dry and even brittle.

Keep yourself healthy and beautiful all seasons, not just for the warmer ones! :-)
